Pisces by Johfra, pg. 192 in your personalized book You and the Universe
With the lovely, sweet and sentimental Poseidon/Neptune in Johfra Bosschart's Pisces we arrive at the last of his Zodiac Series of posters. Center is a very tender and beneficent version of the god Neptune, ruler of the sea and planetary ruler of the sign Pisces. His astrological symbol appears upper left in the poster. Jupiter’s astrological symbol appears upper right. Jupiter is ruler of Sagittarius and co-ruler of Pisces with Neptune, similar to Saturn co-ruling Aquarius with Uranus. Pisces is the mutable water sign, and its keyword is “I believe.” The most sensitive sign of the zodiac, Pisces has to guard against negative energy by choosing environments for itself that, as we used to say in the sixties, have the least “bad vibes”. Pisces is so surrendered and submissive that it also has to use more discrimination, the hallmark of its opposite sign Virgo, in choosing, or being chosen by, intimate partners. Pisces rules the feet and the pineal gland in the human body. Neptune’s symbol is the crescent of personality being pierced by the cross of matter, representing the sacrifice of the personality and personal needs that Pisces asks of its sign carriers. It also symbolizes the master of the Piscean age Jesus Christ who sacrificed his life for mankind. But in fact every soul incarnating on earth is crucified on the cross of matter, in that our soul is immortal but our body must die. In the horoscope chart our cross of crucifixion is symbolized by the cross of the horizon and midheaven-nadir axes. This cross pins down our incarnation at a point in space-time: the horizon axis represents the place of our incarnation, and the midheaven-nadir axis the time. The Age of Aquarius which we entered in the mid-20th century may change all that, either by granting us physical immortality through our mastery of matter (and thus our physical bodies) with our minds, by becoming one with our souls, by becoming bio-mechanical humanoids, through advanced medicine and nanorobots; or if not immortality, simply the transcendence of personal sacrifice to something more appropriate and individuated for the Aquarian Age. Poseidon/Neptune holds two fish in his hands symbolize an individual’s soul and personality. In this representation they are tied together by 12 stars symbolizing the signs of the zodiac. The personality—the red fish—identifies with the senses and that which is physical; and in so doing swims “downwards” as it were. The soul—the blue fish—identifies with its source: the spiritual and that of which this world is derivative, and in so doing swims “upwards.” But the two fish are joined—more obviously so in the customary Pisces symbol at the very base of this painting—and so they must both travel the same journey. This is the Pisces’ predicament. Being as sensitive and receptive to all vibration as it is, it knows that there is more to existence than the physical world and appearances. So it either tries to escape it through fantasy, delusion, movies, theater, the arts and/or drugs—or to truly transcend it through spiritual practice and discipline. Either way both the soul and the personality are together for the ride. |
