Mercury opposed Ascendant

Any planet conjunct one of the four angles is significant, and when that planet symbolizes how you think and communicate, it is very significant indeed. You were born as the planet Mercury set in the west. "Mercury opposed the ascendant" is the same as Mercury conjunct the descendant or seventh house cusp; it is from the latter perspective that this aspect will be interpreted. The descendant is a symbolic condensation point for what we don't identify with in ourselves and therefore project onto or seek out in others or through intimate relationships. With this placement of Mercury you need close partners or intimate one-to-one relationships to express yourself verbally or mentally—to help you think at your deepest and your best and to bring you out mentally. You may even identify with and imitate or borrow your partner's verbal or written style. You are very drawn to relationships of the mind, and your partners are quick, smart, witty and often quite youthful. You are never wittier or more at your mental best than when in a group or lost in a deep conversation. You can be very sociable, but are somewhat compelled to adjust your thoughts and opinions in response to the other.

If Mercury is afflicted (at birth or by transit) by Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto, you will experience quarreling and arguments in relationships. It would be wise to settle all difficulties out of court. In these instances be careful of what you put on paper. Be careful not to neglect your own intellectual pursuits by devoting too much of your mental energy to others.

Famous people with a relatively strong (orb < 5°) Mercury conjunct descendant are/were William F. Buckley, Barbara Bush, Art Carney, Bob Dylan, Anna Freud, Katherine Hepburn, Herman Hesse, Lee Iacocca, Sugar Ray Leonard, Charlie Rose, Lee Trevino and Loretta Young.

When Mercury is conjunct the descendant it can be in either the 6th or the 7th house. Mercury in the sixth house and within 3° or 4° of the descendant is on the "dark side" of the 7th house cusp and expresses itself in both houses. As it moves even closer to the descendant while yet in the 6th house it expresses itself more and more predominantly through the 7th. Still in the 6th and within about 1°-1˝° of the descendant it should be considered as being in the 7th house. This dark side effect is true of all the planets and all the angles.
