Pluto was in Cancer, for everyone on Earth, from July 1913 to June 1939, the first time since the 1600s. Individuals born during this 26-year period will go through a lot of changes that affect their sense of security. Many of these souls are learning to supply their own emotional security from within, rather than to depend on external sources such as work, family, parents or lovers. Often this happens by being born into families where one or both parents couldn't (or didn't) see you as an individual. During this period psychology and psychoanalysis spread (Freud died in 1939), and the world went through the First World War, the great depression, the lead-up to the Second World War, and the rise of Nazism.
