You were born on the full Moon, probably the single most important aspect in your chart. The full moon in general symbolizes a polarity between the two great lights: the Sun and the Moon. At full moon the Sun is directly opposite the Moon in the sky, symbolizing—among other things—that the masculine is opposed to the feminine. This most significant lunar phase also represents a polarity between your true being and sense of purpose (Sun/father-conscious principle), and your personality and emotions (Moon/mother-unconscious principle). This inner lack of harmony was probably also reflected between your father and your mother as well. They may have separated while you were still young enough to have felt it strongly—or there may have been emotional discord or tension between them which you soaked up unconsciously. Harmonious unions in the outer world will be difficult for you until you achieve one within yourself. And the difficult people with whom you struggle in the world are those you unconsciously choose to bring into your life to show yourself your inner conflict. Seeing it outside of yourself (opposition = awareness) is the process you use to make those shadowy, unconscious lunar parts of yourself more conscious (solar). When this inner conflict is resolved, so too will your need for the outer struggle.

If your parents were emotionally or physically separated, having to split your allegiance may have become a model for you with other couples or with multiple goals, hobbies, or careers you pursue. You may find that you need to alternate your loyalties from one to the other as though your goals or friends were antagonistic to each other as were your parents to each other. If this is true for you, becoming aware that the emotional charge or orientation you place on pairs in your life, be they couples or your own pursuits, has nothing to do with them but is rather you still trying to love your parents. The awareness of this will help you to gain the emotional centeredness and perspective necessary to enjoy more than one thing or person at the same time.

You may feel that everyone else around you is in the wrong, but sometimes it is yourself with whom you are out of touch. Your physical energy will go through phases, just as the Moon does. Become familiar with your own particular cycle, so that you can use your energy when your tide is in, and rest when your tide is out. This aspect also indicates a compulsive awareness of others and their emotional states, which will at first hinder your ability to focus on yourself and your own purposes. As you resolve your internal struggle, however, this awareness will cease to conflict with your own needs, and can instead function as an asset in seeing others deeply.

So you have split yourself between your rational, masculine side, and the mysterious, less defined feminine principle. Listen to the great mother, and learn how to hear and accept the messages that she and her irrational muses have for you. In doing so you will find integration and an inner marriage that a marriage in the outer world can mirror.

It is important to consider the quadruplicity (cardinal, fixed or mutable signs) that this opposition is in. Mutable oppositions (between Gemini and Sagittarius or between Virgo and Pisces) need an adjustment in thinking or attitude and are telling you that you need to change your mind about something. Cardinal oppositions (between Aries and Libra or between Cancer and Capricorn) can be handled by appropriate action, or by changing or ceasing the way you go after or start things. Fixed oppositions (between Taurus and Scorpio or between Leo and Aquarius) are the hardest to deal with because they symbolize your will, which is far harder to surrender or to change than thought or action.

My first teacher Isabel Hickey thought that squares or oppositions in mutable signs are just beginning to manifest in this lifetime and are therefore the easiest to handle. Squares or oppositions in cardinal signs, on the other hand, are carried over from our last lifetime. If handled appropriately through constructive action they won't manifest in the next life in fixed signs. And squares or oppositions in fixed signs symbolize “lessons we have failed to learn over many lifetimes, and are deeply ingrained patterns of behavior.” And because they symbolize our will and have become habituated ways of being or responding, they need a great deal of attention and self-discipline to change.
