The Purpose of Astrology as I see it, is to afford people seeking self-knowledge another perspective of their character and a light into their souls. Astrology has this capacity because the unfolding of any life or cycle can be read in its seed or beginning, and because human souls and celestial bodies are embedded in the same energy matrix. Over millennia mankind has come to see relationships between personality and planetary positions, and that it is their synchronicity -- not causation -- that causes planetary configurations to be descriptive of character, karma, and the resonant energies through which we move. It is natural to want to know the future before it happens.
Fortunately for the development of spiritual muscle and whatever wisdom we hope
to obtain, however, this is impossible via astrology. There may indeed be gifted
psychics capable of foreseeing events, Edgar Cayce and Nostradamus being notable
examples; but again, this is not the province of astrology. After 34 years in
this business I have come to the firm belief that using astrology to predict
specific events or timings is, at least as practiced in the west, a vexation of
the spirit and the pursuit of fools. So what’s the difference between reading the
"unfolding" of someone’s life in their natal horoscope and
predicting their future? A basic tenet of astrology, at least the brand I
practice, is that we are immortal beings who incarnate at a moment in time and
space descriptive of two things: our choices and actions in previous
incarnations, and consequently, our proclivities this time around. And just as
previous actions determine character, strengths and weaknesses, their signatures
in a natal horoscope can be found and interpreted by a skilled reader. To say
that someone has "come in" with a propensity to command, teach,
travel, gamble, or deceive, and that these traits will be stressed, enhanced or
opposed during a certain interval of time, is altogether different than to say
that a specific event will transpire at a certain time. By knowing who we are
and what we have made of ourselves -- by knowing our character -- we can surmise
with which of the many forthcoming energies we are most likely to resonate, and
to which we will respond. But we cannot know precisely what form energy will take in the world, nor exactly how we will respond. Our choices are up to our free will, which allows us to learn and to be directed by our correct and inappropriate choices. The choices available to an athlete, a handicapped person, a prisoner, a millionaire or a poor person are very different. And it is this "character and karma" that an astrologer reads when he or she interprets your chart. If it were possible to predict the future using astrology there would be plenty of very wealthy astrologers out there, and except for a few who have marketed themselves well and worked very hard to get where they are, I don’t see a single one. There is no way of knowing your future without first doing the hard, hard work of knowing yourself -- which necessarily precedes wisdom as well. |
