8th house astrological model

The 8th House

The 12 houses can be subdivided into four groups: the angular houses (1st, fourth, 7th and 10th) that fall counterclockwise away from the horizontal and vertical  angles in the above model; the succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) that follow them; and the remaining four cadent houses (the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) immediately clockwise of the angles. The angular houses are by far the strongest group. The second strongest group is the succedent houses and the eighth house is one of them. The succedent houses are involved with your desires and your emotional nature and have a stable or fixed nature similar to the fixed signs of the same ordinal numbers.

The eighth house asks us to enlarge or sacrifice our ego boundaries in order to enter into relationship or union with another or others. To do so, some aspect of our personality or ego must die. Usually it is some thing, not some one, that dies, and with the passing away of that limiting aspect of our personality we experience a releasing freedom.

Herein is the second aspect of this house: resurrection and rebirth. The eighth house rules personal evolution, growth, transformation and change, death, rebirth, sex, possessions of a relationship, legacies, inheritance, taxes, rituals, initiations and the occult, the astral body and reincarnation, and the severing of ties to that to which we are attached. A planet in the eighth indicates that a personal facet of your psyche is under pressure to work more cooperatively or jointly with others. Many planets here signify a person whose life can be characterized by change. Such individuals may find continuous states of affairs monotonous, and periodically bring about changes or crises to feel truly alive.

President John Kennedy had five planets in the eighth house of sex and death and the singer Tom Jones has four there. Other distinguished individuals who have or had an accentuated eighth house (both the Sun and the natural ruler of the eighth Pluto in the eighth house) are/were Dick Button, Vikki Carr, Terri Clark, Terry Clements, Bert Convy, Matt Damon, Galileo Galilei, Giancarlo Giannini, John Glenn, Mary McCarthy, Reggie Miller, Jacob Moreno, Sydney Pollack, Eva Marie Saint and Harry S. Truman.

A planet is said to rule a house when it is the ruler of the sign on the cusp or beginning of that house. Using this concept, locate the ruler of your eighth house, then notice the house it occupies. The house the eighth-house ruler is in holds experiences to help you sexually, and to grow and change or to share what you own (eighth house). That's what the eighth-house ruler is doing in the house it occupies: gaining experience to fill the needs of the house it rules. The eighth-house ruler's aspects and sign show its ease or difficulty in fulfilling those eighth house needs. These principles are true of every house ruler and every planet. In this case, oppositions between the rulers or occupants of the eighth and the second houses highlight finding a balance between your material independence and sharing your resources with others.

Astronomically speaking, the eighth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky midway between the Midheaven and the western horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two to four hours before they set.
