Unafflicted: not afflicted; (see "Afflicted"); said of a planet that is not otherwise weekend by sign, house or aspect. Vernal Equinox: the point on the ecliptic at which the Sun is in the plane of the Earth’s equator and day and night are of equal length all over the Earth. The vernal equinox defines 0° of the sign Aries, or the beginning of the astrological cycle. The vernal equinox is also defined as the line formed by the intersection of the Earth's equatorial and orbital planes, and the direction (vector) on that line towards the Sun when the Sun is passing from below the equatorial plane to above it. (The opposite direction on that line/vector is known as the autumnal equinox.) Because the Earth's pole wobbles in a 26,000-year cycle, so too does the Earth's equatorial plane, and hence the point of intersection of the equatorial and orbital planes. Thus causes the vernal equinox to move (precess) backwards among the stars in a 26,000 year cycle known as the precession of the equinoxes. Vertical Circle: a plane perpendicular to the local horizon and passing through the center of the Earth. The "Meridian" is a vertical circle passing through the north and south points on the horizon; whereas the "Prime Vertical" is a vertical circle that passes through the east and west points on the horizon. Water: one of the four elements (earth, air, fire and water) by which the signs and the houses can be categorized. In general, the element of water represents emotion, responsiveness, instability and change. For its application in the signs and houses, see below. Water house: the fourth, eighth, and twelfth houses; those houses that have the same ordinal numbers as the three water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Water sign: The responsive, unstable, fertile and flexible element, as exemplified by the water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. A liquid is that state of matter - the counterpart of the astrological element water - in which the average vibrational energy of the constituent particles exceeds their bonding energy. See "plasma" for an explanation of temperature, absolute zero, and the four states of matter. Weak: a planet in detriment, fall, or the corresponding house (by number). Well Aspected: a planet with trines or sextiles, none or only weak squares or oppositions, AND not in hard aspect (conjunct, square, semisquare, sesquiquadrate, semisextile or quincunx) to Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto (unless that outer planet is its higher octave). |
